Professor Johnson Talks to ABC10 About Immigration Status of Suspect in Fatal Shooting

Professor Kevin R. Johnson spoke to ABC10 for a Sept. 11 story about the Department of Homeland Security reporting that the man accused of killing Shalini Thakur had entered the country illegally in 2023 through Arizona. Local authorities said that the suspect, 22-year-old Rohit Rohit, had been stalking Thakur for months and fatally shot her in a Sacramento parking lot on Sept. 8. 

Johnson told ABC10 that it's important to keep in mind how California and Arizona have different sanctuary policies that can limit local law enforcement's involvement with federal immigration enforcement efforts.

Kevin R. Johnson is a distinguished professor of law and Chicanx Studies emeritus and director of the Aoki Center. He is the former Mabie/Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and he served as dean of UC Davis Law from 2008 to 2024. Johnson is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law and civil rights.
