English Proficiency

J-1 scholars must demonstrate sufficient English-language skills to function effectively in daily life in the United States.  Applicants must demonstrate English-language proficiency by providing results from one of the following:

  • an IELTS overall band score of 6.0 or higher.
  • a TOEFL score of at least 500 on the paper-based test, 173 on the computer-based test, or 61 on the internet-based test.
  • In lieu of an English proficiency test score, applicants may arrange a brief interview with us to assess their English-language proficiency.
