UC Davis School of Law Family Protection Clinic student Sarah Martinez '08 secured the return of a 12-year-old child from Mexico through court appearances, negotiations, and collaboration with the Yolo County District Attorney's Child Abduction Unit. The child's father had taken the child to Mexico in violation of a custody order. Judge Donna M. Petre, presiding over the proceeding, commented that Martinez was a strong advocate for her client in a difficult case.

The School of Law's Family Protection Clinic received $435,000 in funding from the US Department of Justice (DOJ) as part of the Violence Against Women Act. Since 1999, when the DOJ first provided funds to establish the clinic at UC Davis and support its operation for the first 18 months, the Clinic has continually received grant money from the DOJ.
