UC Davis School of Law had a big presence at a virtual immigration conference on Oct. 16. The conference, organized by the Southwestern Law Review, was titled "A Conversation About Deported Americans," in reference to a book by Professor Beth Caldwell,    Deported Americans: Life After Deportation to Mexico The book looks at the impact of the U.S. removal system on long-term legal immigrants deported to Mexico.

My comments focused on lessons from Professor Caldwell's books, including (1) the human impacts of the U.S. immigration laws; (2) the racial impacts of the removal laws; (3) the disparate racial impacts on the criminal removal provisions; and (4) the need for reform.

Professor Jack Chin tied the book into the long history of racial discrimination in immigration laws. Professor Leticia Saucedo looked at the efforts to build up the qualitative evidence of the human impacts of removals.

King Hall Alumna Carrie Rosenbaum `02 also made a presentation. It focused on the Equal Protection rights for immigrants.

UC Davis School of Law has an amazing faculty and an amazing immigration faculty.
