Janjay Titus Flanjay (LLM '25 | Liberia)

Transcript:

My name is Janjay Titus Flanjay. I'm from Liberia, West Africa. Particularly from a very small community known as Chocolate City.

And I hold a bachelor's degree in law from Cavendish University, Uganda.

What are your plans after the LL.M. Program?

After my LL.M. program, I do plan on doing the New York Bar, and I am planning on focusing on commercial areas in commercial law and international law.

What inspired you to join the legal profession?

I'm from a society, Liberia, that had into so many years of civil war. And with that, I've seen my society witness a lot of pain, a lot of struggle, and so many losses.

So I believe in the saying that one generation plants a tree, another waters it, and another gets to enjoy the shade. So, I just think that as the youths, it is time for us to raise our voices. Say no to war. Say no to injustice and also say no to inhumane treatment of any kind, and also be able to hold perpetrators or criminals accountable for their crimes.

So that has inspired me a lot.

Why did you choose UC Davis School of Law?

I chose UC Davis because of the strong sense of community and the support given to international students here. There are a lot of resources that also enable me to thrive academically.

You are actually put in space with people who are determined and also willing to- like minded like you, to come and make a positive change in their community or their country.

And the faculty is great professors that great are very friendly and easy to approach.

Professor Joe has been- he’s great. And, I see him as a mentor. Actually, I had an interest in business association back in Uganda, but I wasn't really paying attention to it as much compared to when I came here and actually met him when he taught the subject.

Got to like it a little bit more. And I just, like, in general, I see myself being, a few years from now, I want to be in the corporate field. So yeah.

What advice do you have for prospective students who wish to do their LL.M. at UC Davis?

I would say be open-minded. Be proactive. You could engage with your lecturers, engage with your friends, and also be able to explore. I believe that there’s also a lot of opportunity beyond the walls of UC Davis. So you could learn a lot from that.
