AB540 and Undocumented Student Center Featured in Diverse Magazine
The AB540 and Undocumented Student Center, a unique partnership between the UC Davis School of Law Immigration Law Clinic and the UC Davis Division of Student Affairs that provides legal services for undocumented students and their families, was the subject of a feature article in Diverse magazine. Included in the article are remarks from Dean Kevin R. Johnson and Marcus Tang '14, the first AB 540 Post Graduate Legal Fellow.
Dean Johnson talked about the need for legal assistance for undocumented students. "Immigration legal procedures of all kinds can be scary and frightening," he said. "The immigration laws are among the most complex of all the laws, and there [are] a lot of sort of minefields in some of these forms. It's important that you get things right - you can be punished if you don't fill it out accurately."
Tang said his experiences as a child of immigrant parents inform his work at the Center. He remembers "feeling like we didn't belong and being conscious as a child of seeing my parents try and interact with community members who didn't really understand the immigrant experience. That was always kind of difficult for me as a kid."
