Alice Chang '25, Dominique Kato '25 Argue Before Ninth Circuit
For the second time in a month, students from the Civil Rights Clinic argued in the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in San Francisco. Alice Chang ’25 and Dominique Kato ’25 appeared before a panel of judges on April 1. The panel comprised Andrew Hurwitz, Lucy Koh and Anthony Johnstone.
The clinic represents a state prisoner who sued prison medical providers alleging deprivation of medical treatment for his hepatitis-C condition. The district court granted summary judgment to the defendants. The issues on appeal include whether the defendants are entitled to qualified immunity and whether there are disputed issues of fact regarding the alleged Eighth Amendment violations.
Professors Vikram Amar and Eric Fish, as well as Sacramento attorney Rudolph Delson, helped the students prepare for this argument.
Professor and Civil Rights Clinic Director Carter White supervised the students’ work on the case.
