Bee Quotes Dean Johnson About Lack of Asylum Claims by Migrants Flown to Sacramento

The Sacramento Bee quoted Dean Kevin R. Johnson and Marcus Tang ’14 in a Sept. 12 story about why most of the migrants who were sent to Sacramento unannounced in June by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis have not yet applied for asylum.

Tang, an attorney for the California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation, noted that seeking asylum “is a guaranteed risk. … If they get denied, you’re guaranteed to have a case before the immigration court.”

Johnson pointed out that, among other potential hurdles, non-citizens seeking asylum are not guaranteed an attorney.

Kevin R. Johnson is the law school’s dean, Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and professor of Chicana/o studies at UC Davis. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
