Immigration Clinic Students Win Cancellation of Removal
UC Davis School of Law Immigration Law Clinic students Camellia Imani '16 and Junteng Zheng '16 succeeding in obtaining the cancellation of a removal order for a detained refugee who fled religious persecution in Iran.
Because the client cannot speak English and was unable to represent himself, the Immigration Court asked the Clinic to advocate on his behalf. Working under the supervision of Holly Cooper, lecturer and staff attorney at the Clinic, Imani and Zheng were able to put together a full asylum and cancellation case in less than one month, aided by Imani's ability to speak Farsi. The students successfully prepared exhibit indices for both his asylum and cancellation case, conducted direct examination in court, put on a closing argument, and researched complex criminal and immigration law issues, said Cooper.
