Julie Montgomery '96 Profiled in Plaintiff Magazine
Julie Montgomery '96, Senior Staff Counsel with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH), is the subject of an in-depth profile in the latest issue of Plaintiff magazine. Montgomery, who worked for more than 17 years for California Rural Legal Assistance before moving on to practice employment law with DFEH, cites her experiences with the UC Davis School of Law Immigration Law Clinic as a profound influence on her career choices.
"That was really the time I knew strongly where I wanted to go after graduating and what kind of work I wanted to do," said Montgomery. "I worked with people from all over the world - different cultures, different back grounds. I handled political asylum cases or people who were from Southeast Asia and Central America. We worked deportation cases for people who had had certain criminal offenses that were considered deportable. Some of those cases were really life and death - there were good chances if the person was returned to their country of origin, they could very well not survive."
Montgomery, who has taught a course on Farmworkers and the Law at King Hall, also speaks on her passion for public interest law and comments on some of the cases she has handled over the years.
