The University of California, Davis School of Law raised a remarkable $21.4 million during UC Davis’ eight-year “Expect Greater: From UC Davis, for the World” fundraising campaign. Concluded in June, the campaign generated more than $2.25 billion in support campus-wide.

On Sept. 19, Professor Courtney Joslin presented her forthcoming NYU Law Review article “Multiparenthood” at University of Virginia School of Law as part of the annual Nonmarriage Roundtable. Joslin co-authored the article with Yale Law Professor Douglas NeJaime.

On Sept. 28, Professor Courtney Joslin presented at the American Bar Association Family Law Section’s fall conference. The presentation addressed developments in the law regarding fertility care and assisted reproduction, including the recently enacted Michigan Family Protection Act.

Insight into Diversity magazine has recognized UC Davis School of Law with a Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award. 

The awards, which will be showcased in the magazine's November/December issue, honor “colleges and universities dedicated to excellence in the pursuit of equity, access, inclusion and diversity.”

Student protesters’ right to be heard carries a lot of weight, but it has important limits, Professor Emeritus Alan Brownstein wrote in a Sept. 10 opinion piece in The Hill.

A new study by Professor Kevin R. Johnson and UCLA Civil Rights Project Research Associate William Kidder found enrollment of low-income, undocumented students declined by half at University of California and California State University campuses from 2016 through the 2022-23 academic year.

Professor Mary Ziegler wrote an Aug. 15 opinion piece for the New York Times headlined “Democrats Are Missing Out on a Big Opportunity on Abortion Rights.”

“Protecting reproductive rights is one of Democrats’ strongest issues … yet Democrats have not fully capitalized on this apparent advantage,” Ziegler wrote.

In late May, Professor Richard Frank spoke to state and federal judges assembled at a National Judicial College-sponsored water law conference in Salt Lake City.

The conference focused on the environmental crisis currently confronting the Great Salt Lake due to fresh water diversions from rivers feeding the lake, protracted drought, and consequential increased salinity of the lake. 

Professor Richard Frank spoke to Rolling Stone magazine on June 2 about efforts by oil companies to block Honolulu’s climate-related damages case from going to trial. A week later, the U.S. Supreme Court asked the Biden administration’s solicitor general for its opinion on energy firms’ appeals in the case.

Professors Afra Asharipour and Peter Lee served as discussants, and Professor Menesh Patel as a discussant and panelist, at the Law & Entrepreneurship Association’s annual conference on Sept. 6 at the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco.

Professor Lisa Pruitt and University of Puget Sound Professor Emelie Peine published a Sept. 11 opinion piece for Inside Higher Ed headlined “Stop With the Rural-Bashing on Campuses.”

“We have a responsibility as educators to challenge antirural bias,” the scholars wrote.

Professor Carter White spoke to the Daily Journal in August about a U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit case in which the Civil Rights Clinic advocated for a mother’s right to sue a school district for racial bias on behalf of her children.

A three-judge panel ruled that the mother could not sue, but Civil Rights Clinic Supervising Attorney White and other attorneys are seeking an en banc review.
